Frequently asked questions

What is a silent disco?

A silent disco is a dance party heard solely through headphones that enables you to switch between three distinct music channels and adjust the volume to your personal preference. Our music technicians curate music selections on 3 distinct channels and leave room to react in real time according to the participants' music preferences and overall vibe, ensuring there’s something for every type of listener. Hush Hush does not do live mixing or altering of the individual songs, but we can let DJs do channel takeovers to mix live (see our Extras page for more information).

Hush Hush silent discos have three music channels with color coordinated lights.  In our most popular music selection Green is our ‘Old-But-Gold’ (disco heavy dance hits through the ages), Blue is our ‘Modern Bangers’ (nostalgia forward, hip hop leaning, hit after hit), and Red is our request hotline.

How do you work the headphones?

If you put the headphones on with the little dip facing you, the channel selection is behind your left ear to switch between the Green, Blue, or Red channels. Behind your right ear is the volume - scroll down to raise the volume or scroll up to lower the volume.

What is your service area?

Hush Hush is based in Jacksonville and will travel a maximum of 2 hours in any direction. We operate throughout Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, St. John’s County, St Augustine, and as far as Gainesville.

What is the difference between a Hush Hush Music Technician and a Live DJ?

Both Live DJs and Hush Hush Music Technicians are curating music for the present moment and audience, reacting in real time to build and keep the momentum of the dance floor, just in different ways.

Hush Hush Music Technicians do not mix any of the music, instead playing original tracks as the artist intended. Our technicians provide a balanced vibe across all 3 channels that prioritizes danceability, nostalgia, and participation. When you book us for a silent disco, we’ll send you a survey to learn about your music interests + censorship needs to ensure that each channel reflects your preferences.

Live DJs blend, mix, and alter music to reflect their personal artist identity. Add hype and bring an artful touch to your event by hiring a live DJ to take over 1 (or multiple!) channels. See our Extras page to view our recommended live DJs and inquire about their personalized rates.

Can I use my own DJ for a silent disco channel?

Yes, we love live DJ channel takeovers! See our recommendations on our Extras page.

Can a live band perform through the headphones?

Yes we can! Learn more about our live shows here.

Can you rent headphones/silent disco equipment?

We do not do silent disco equipment rentals. Hush Hush Silent disco equipment must always be operated by our trained music technicians. To book an event with us, you can request a quote here. See our Extras page for additional gear rentals, like lighting set-ups, our LED inflatable tent, and more.

Can I hire you to DJ without the silent disco headphone equipment?

No. Our specialty is our 3 channel silent disco operation, but we can point you to some Live DJs that we know and love on our Extras page.

Are your events kid-friendly?

It depends on the event - some events are 18+ or 21+ depending on the location. Our most popular family friendly events are Sip & Stroll on 3rd Thursdays and our seasonal Sunset Silent Discos at the Jacksonville Beach Pier. For these events, we curate censored, family-friendly music on specific channels. On our events calendar, all family-friendly events are marked with this all-ages emoji: 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒.

Do you do family-friendly silent discos, like kids parties or church events?

Yes, kids and families love our silent discos! We can curate censored + family-friendly music channels tailored to your preferences. We also have headphone cushion adapters for little ones. Plus, the headphones are helpful for individuals with sound sensitivities because of the ability to individually control volume.

is external sound included for silent discos?

External sound is not included in our silent disco rates. We have external sound options on our Extras page, or you can use your own or opt for a silent room.

What forms of payment do you accept at silent discos?

We accept cash, card, and Apple Pay.
